For those of us who continue to suffer year after year, it is important to remember that we can’t get rid of Lyme if we are also infected with one of the many strains of Babesia, or one of the hundreds of “BLO” (Bartonella Like Organisms), or one of the other viruses, pathogens, fungus or bacterial infections that usually accompany and operate in a synergistic manner with Lyme.

We also need to remember how difficult it is to get diagnostic confirmation of Lyme, or the many co-infections that come from tick bites. Unfortunately, we need to be proactive in our search for a complete cure – the significant evidence that is amassing has not yet penetrated the incredible power of the IDSA, insurance companies and specific doctors egos. (What will it take for a doctor sworn to help – not harm – to say “…I was wrong…”?)

We also need to support, in any way we can, the courageous doctors on the front line who are forced to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal battles, and refuse to stop treating their Lyme patients the best they can. There is so much emerging information that is critical to our treatment, and sometimes it is up to us to deliver new research to the doctors (even some LLDs) if we really want to get better.

For instance, Dr. James Schaller in Florida has written hundreds of articles and some truly significant books, is now in court trying to save his medical license.

This is his most recent effort to share the latest information about Lyme co-infections – Babesia specifically:

Dr. Schaller has decided to give access to his latest book, the 2009 Babesia Update free to anyone who needs or wants to read it. Even given the immense sacrifice of time and cost to him personally, his continued and growing awareness of the many people sick with Babesia has prompted him to give out the information to save as many lives as possible. For those of you who read the first book, The Diagnosis and Treatment of Babesia – which has much useful information that should not be ignored and is not included in this book – you will understand why he is so passionate. His son, Jeremy, would not have survived had he not taken up the mallet and strove to find successful ways of treating this illness. Jeremy is alive, healthy and a wonderful young man thanks to his Father’s care and hard work.

Before outlining the bad news regarding Babesia, I want to report some good news – even though it is only a small victory.

The medical community will have had to change their belief about how the spirochete is passed from the tick to its host based on a recently released medical report from researchers who collaborated from the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut:

Star M. Dunham-Ems in the Department of Medicine;

Melissa J. Caimano in the Department of Medicine;

Justin D. Radolf from the Department of Medicine and the Department of Genetics and Developmental Biology;

and Christian H. Eggers from the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut ;

and Utpal Pal from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in College Park, Maryland.

That makes eight more respected researchers who can argue previously held views with solid evidence. I can only imagine that this research will continue with natural progression to further enlighten falsely held views. (And you won’t see their names on the “Quacklist”) If you are interested in the actual report you can find it here at the Journal of Clinical Investigations.

Now for the bad news.

Whether you are a fan of Dr. James Schaller or not, he has recently released a report from his personal research negating previously published work about the difficulty of diagnosis and treatment of Babesia.

He claims that more and more species of Babesia are found each year and the variations of these strains make diagnosis even more difficult. He also claims that the previous doses of Mepron and Artemesia are not strong enough and that he is witnessing relapses from patients who have been using the LLD’s standard of care from ILADS.

He also reiterates in the strongest language that Lyme Disease cannot be cured (unless treatted within days of the tick bite) if these other infections are present.

A sample of his book is free of charge at this location.

Many of you may have heard about this – or some of it – and been alarmed as I have been. However, the most alarming theory presented in this sampling of his new book (in my opinion) is that the spread of the co-infections is not just affecting us, it is affecting the tick population.

In other words, the ticks are now more commonly full of multiple diseases and viruses, some of which are treated in a similar manner but many of which need to be treated differently with far greater strength, intensity and care to completely eradicate the underlying co-infections before there is any chance to effectively treat the Lyme.

So, if the meds for our chronic Lymed aren’t working Dr. Schaller (and others) have the answer. We are sicker than we thought, and our chances for a complete cure is even more remote than what we thought.

Until recently, Babesia was considered a rare disease because it was only diagnosed in extremely ill patients with high fevers (104+). The bacteria which invades the red blood cells, has been largely ignored by the medical community in part because there wasn’t a reliable test for diagnosing it, and in part because there has been so little information about the disease.

More recently it has become associated with Lyme disease, and has been documented to be synergistically linked with this endemic illness that is contracted by a tick bite. The symptoms for Babesia can be very difficult to distinguish between the symptoms for Lyme disease, and with so few doctors being literate on the intricacies regarding testing, diagnosis and treatment, the vast number of cases go untreated and unreported.

New research being done by Dr. James L. Schaller of Naples, Florida has brought about a break-through in our understanding of Babesia which is now considered the most common co-infection of Lyme disease, and not rare at all. He has found that not only can the disease go undetected for years, with no symptoms at all (like Lyme), there are many species of Babesia for which there are no tests.

Babesia symptoms, which may go back ten years or more, include one or more of the following; listlessness, slow thinking, high fevers or unexplained fevers, reduced appetite, chills, sweats, headaches and/or migraines, fatigue, muscle and/or joint pain, depression, anxiety, panic, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, cough, dark urine, enlarged spleen and/or liver, jaundice, enlarged lymph nodes, memory loss, psychiatric illness, struggle organizing, urgency to sleep in day, waves of generalized itching, dizziness, chest wall pain, sensitivity to light, and abdominal pain.

If you have some of these symptoms, you will immediately run into a problem getting a diagnosis. Dr. Schaller insists that there are no labs trained to catch the various forms of Babesia.

In his book, “The Diagnosis and Treatment of Babesia” Dr Schaller describes the various tests available for confirming Babesia, and insists that lab technicians are not trained to examine the red blood cells but focus on the white blood cells. He further states that even when examining red blood cells, that the lab technicians will fail to see the infection unless they take the extra time to look very carefully and understand what they are looking for. Just as most doctors are not trained on the myriad symptoms associated with Babesia, lab technicians are not trained with respect to Babesia either.

Dr Schaller prefers Fry Labs and always request that malaria and hemoprotozoan infections be ruled out (eg. Babesia species, Erlichia species, Anaplasmas and Bartonella species), and that the technician look at the blood under 1000x with oil, and to look carefully for “ring forms, tetrads and other signs of parasites.”

Treatment can be even more complicated due to each individual’s combination of infections, the severity of their infection and symptoms, their immune system’s strength or weakness, and/or other possible health problems.

Most every doctor who understands the intricacies of Lyme disease and co-infections will agree that a specialized combination of drugs and/or herbs must be used. Even then, there is a strong likelihood that the treatment will need to be adjusted based on the patient’s response.

In closing, it is important to suspect one or more co-infections if specific Lyme treatments fail. As more doctors come to understand the symptoms of each infection and the synergy between them, hopefully that knowledge will lead to more people finding a cure from chronic Lyme disease.
