Lyme in Ireland

Lyme in Ireland

For those of us in “Lyme Central” there are constant complaints about the lack of Lyme-literate doctors.  Imagine how hard it must be to be sick with Lyme in a country that denies the existence of the disease!

Jenny O’Dea (shown in picture) has been spearheading efforts in her country through Facebook.  Send her a note of encouragement if you have a moment…

The following are recent posts from her Facebook Group at http://ticktalkireland.wordpress.com/

What is the status of Lyme in Ireland?

September 2006:

John Gormley, Green Party Leader and TD for Dublin South East asked the Minister for Health and Children (Ms Harney) the statistics in Ireland [link now removed from site]

Extracts of the response was as follows: “Lyme disease is not a notifiable infectious disease in Ireland. This means that there is no legal requirement on doctors to report cases to their local Director of Public Health, so this makes estimates of incidence difficult.

A fact sheet on Lyme Disease has been made available on the HPSC’s website to provide members of the General Public and Media with advice on minimizing the risk of Lyme Disease (see link below). In addition, part of the work of the Vectorborne Subcommittee in the New Year will be the development of Clinical Guidance on the management of Lyme Disease and raising awareness of this condition among clinicians.

A recent reply from the European Commission states the following:

“The European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) is currently reviewing the process of reporting of vector borne diseases, including Lyme disease, in order to identify how to improve the reporting of this disease in the European Union.

The Commission considers sound epidemiological information on the spread of Lyme disease in the EU particularly important, considering also the potential association of Lyme disease to climate change.”

We are trying to gather facts & figures of those who have been affected in Ireland - please let us know your experiences with the disease using the message boards or wall postings below or you can contact us in private using the following email at ticktalkireland@yahoo.co.uk.
