Colloidal Silver – A Safe Treatment For Lyme Disease?
Colloidal silver is a powerful, natural antiviral, anti-fungal and antibiotic. Acting as a catalyst, it disables the enzyme that one-celled bacteria, viruses and fungi need for their oxygen metabolism. The silver suffocates the germs without any harm to body chemistry.
Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics, which destroy beneficial enzymes, colloidal silver leaves these tissue-cell enzymes intact, as they are radically different from the enzymes of primitive single-celled life. The ruling proclaimed and entered into law that any silver substance in a gelatinous solution could not be sold as a medicinal substance. The ruling categorized colloidal silver as an unclassified drug. Therefore, any colloidal silver products marketed as having medicinal properties are now in violation of federal law.
However, due to the fact that silver is both a “natural substance” and “not a controlled substance”, it is still protected under the The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Under this law, any labeling and/or advertising referring to any health benefits of the substance in question is unlawful. The substance must be labeled as a dietary supplement and may NOT be marketed for external use.

Taken orally, the silver solution is absorbed from the mouth into the bloodstream, then transported quickly to the body cells. Swishing the solution under the tongue briefly before swallowing may result in faster absorption.
In three to four days the silver may accumulate in the tissues sufficiently for benefits to begin. Colloidal silver is eliminated by the kidneys, lymph system and bowel after several weeks. For Lyme disease and/or for those routinely exposed to dangerous pathogenic germs, regular daily intake is recommended.
In cases of minor burns, an accumulation of colloidal silver may hasten healing, reducing the possibility of scar tissue and infection.
As with other treatments for Lyme disease, you must expect a Herxheimer effect when the spirochetes begin to die, so increase your doses slowly and carefully.
Colloidal silver can also be used on Lyme-related skin conditions and/or rashes, in a nasal spray mister – to reach the sinuses and nasal passages, to gargle with for sore throats and even in the eyes.
Colloidal silver is painless on cuts, abrasions, and even in open wounds, because, unlike some antiseptics, it does not destroy tissue cells. It is also excellent as an underarm deodorant, since most underarm odor is caused by bacteria breaking down substances released by the sweat glands.
We have all heard of the “super-germs” that are resistant to most modern antibiotics. Some believe that single-celled germs cannot mutate into silver-resistant forms, as happens with conventional antibiotics. Therefore no tolerance to colloidal silver would develop through mutation.
Inside the body, silver doesn’t form toxic compounds or react with anything other than a germ’s oxygen-metabolizing enzyme. Additionally, there has never been a drug interaction reported between colloidal silver and any other medication.
The basic guideline that has been recommended for using colloidal silver is that it usually “works” if you can get a high enough concentration to the “affected area”. Some will want to experiment with “higher amounts” (such as 8 or more ounces at a time) to find out what it takes to accomplish this. Do not use colloidal silver if you are allergic to contact with silver metals, or if you notice any digestive upset after use.

This doesn’t mean that taking colloidal silver will cure every disease caused by these germs. Colloidal silver must be in contact with the germ for a sufficient period of time to be effective, so patience must be employed.

I think that a high quality colloidal silver is wonderful for helping to kill spirochetes but I do not believe that it can cure anyone without extra help. I personally use a generator and use it for cuts, scrapes, sores, or if someone in the family feels a cold or virus attacking them…it is very gentle and effective. However most mixtures are not capable of getting deep enough.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you!
Unfortunately there is no simple answer due to the wide variety of quality, strength and bioavailability. You are best off discussing it with your LLD or Naturopath or even a salesperson at a big healthfood store.
I am not a licensed medical practitioner so I can’t advise you, however, I can tell you a friend of mine made it himself and took 1/2 cup a day for three weeks and felt cured after that. He took mushroom infusions at the same time…I wish I could be more helpful.

I was treated for very early acute lyme with antibiotics for one month in 2001. Six months later I was diagnosed with sudden chronic fatique/fibromyalgia(mild joint and muscle pains and neurological symptoms in my hands). After doing self directed alternative treatments such as colloidal silver, fever baths, mercury removal, herbs etc. I was symptom free for 6 years. 6 weeks ago I was very sick with a virus and developed a round red rash at the same time. After 6 days of fever and 5 more days of severe pain on my upper left side, I was told my lyme test was positive and the MD prescribed Doxycycline. I now have mild joint and fleeting muscle pain. The brain fog was worse but is less now. I am hoping to get my MD to refill the doxy for another month. I bought some MesoSilver and plan on taking it too. My Natural Oriented Chiropractor told me not to take colloidal silver more than three weeks because it could cause disturbances in my body’s electrical/chemical balance. Have you heard of this. I was planning on taking the MesoSilver for 6 months to be sure to be over it. I do not know of a LLMD that takes my insurance plan and I do not have money to pay out of pocket for long term drug treatment. I am also taking cat’s claw through my chiropractor and immune complex and enzymes with acidophilis. I just need to rest assured that the MesoSilver treatment course is safe and then I will do it.

If the meso silver is helping you than that is what you need to stay on. I am not a licensed doctor, so this is just my opinion, but for most Lymies, the trouble is finding the protocol that is actually effective! Trust your instincts. If you were healthy for six years after your first attack, you can do it again! Hang in there and remember – you are not alone!

There is no medical evidence that colloidal silver is effective as a medical dietary supplement. However, friends who took it to cure acute lyme have reported that they are quite happy with the results so far, though taken in excess can cause skin to turn grey.

Medical “evidence” means many different things to many different people. To a person who has benefited from taking colloidal silver, the evidence is very personal and obvious. To the skeptic who needs double blind studies to determine “evidence” – well a skeptic will find fault with double blind studies…
People believe what they want to believe, but when you are suffering with Lyme disease and a new supplement makes you feel better…well, “the proof is in the pudding.”

I have a lot of experience with colloidal silver, and wanted to offer 2 helpful comments:
1) I recommend (although I’m not a doctor) taking concentrated colloidal silver. What you buy at the health food store is 10 – 15 parts per million. You can get high-volume colloidal silver generators online that produce 100 – 150 ppm and up to 200 – 300 ppm.
2) I have taken colloidal silver in the concentrations above for YEARS with NO BAD EFFECTS. I have not taken the colloidal silver much for the past 4 years now because I have not needed to. I was taking it for a systemic mold infection, and when I would have a really bad reoccurance from breathing in something that would feed it and make it grow, have even taken up to a quart in one day of the 100 – 150 ppm to kill the infection quickly.
Just sharing my experience here. I am not a licensed health practitioner. I really feel for those with major health problems, as I have really been through it.
Please always take a good probiotic supplement when taking anything like colloidal silver, goldenseal, echinacea, or anything that kills bacteria. These do not wipe out good bacteria the way antibiotics do, but it’s still good to take something like Dr. Ohira’s Probiotic 12+ which have been cultured for 3 – 5 YEARS before being encapsulated. They are the only kind I have taken that will actually live and grow and form colonies in your body again. http://www.crohns.net is the least expensive place I’ve found to buy them.
