Celebrities with Lyme Disease

Celebrities with Lyme Disease

On those bad days… the ones where you feel so alone and so empty…it is so important to reach out to the greater Lyme community through blogs or forums. It really help to have friends (even if they are new friend) who truly understand what you are going through.

So, don’t be shy. Take the chance, you will be surprised and rewarded how people will embrace you – and we need that community to keep our sanity as mainstream doctors continue to insist that our illness is all in our heads!

I have always hoped that if some very prominent celebrities were diagnosed with Lyme, that more media attention could help our cause and perhaps even gather some critical attention from the Capitol with long-needed legislation for assistance and relief from medical costs, insurance, costs and treatment availability!

Well, my last post showed the most recent discussion on the House floor over Lyme (make sure you watch it here), which is very exciting. Yet another exciting fact is that there have been more prominent people who have been diagnosed and treated with Lyme disease, such as:

* George W. Bush, President of the US
* US Senator Schumer of NY
* Richard Gere, actor
* Christy Turlington, model
* Amy Tan, author (”The Joy Luck Club”)
* Meg Cabot, author (”The Princess Diaries” series)
* Pete Seeger, folk singer and activist
* Daryl Hall, musician, Hall & Oates
* Rob Kress, former WXYZ weathercaster
* Jamie-Lynn Sigler, actress
* Pamela Weintraub, medical journalist
* Alice Walker, author (”The Color Purple”)
* Rebecca Wells, author (”Ya-Ya” novels)
* Tom Seaver, former New York Mets pitcher
* George Pataki, New York governor

The effect of these notables having a brush with the horror of Lyme disease will certainly build awareness in a way that no blog can do!

Another hopeful sign according to the new website for “Under Our Skin” (http://www.underourskin.com/index.html), two weeks ago, Dr. Mehmet Oz, a regular guest on Oprah and highly regarded voice in the medical community, interviewed Andy Abrahams Wilson and Washington, DC ABC-7’s Medical Reporter Kathy Fowler on his XM radio show “Dr. Oz, Oprah & Friends.”

They talked for 45 minutes about the film and the controversy surrounding Lyme disease. The radio show will air in the coming weeks. In the meantime, Dr. Oz and Oprah want to hear from people with Lyme disease. Go to the website for further information on how to submit your story.

    Lyme Documentary in the National Spotlight
    Under Our Skin on Dr. Oz Show, Oprah & Friends SiriusXM Radio
    Radio Interview about Acclaimed Documentary Runs on Busiest Travel Day of the Year

    (New York, NY)—Under Our Skin, an award winning documentary about Lyme disease, is featured on the Dr. Oz Show on Oprah and Friends SiriusXM Radio, Wednesday, November 26th. Dr. Mehmet Oz puts the national spotlight on the documentary that investigates the human, medical and political dimensions of Lyme disease. Joining Dr. Oz is Under Our Skin filmmaker Andy Abrahams Wilson who explains how he followed Lyme patients and physicians for four years through their long and devastating journeys dealing with this crippling disease.
    Dr. Oz calls the documentary “fascinating and compelling” and says his entire family “couldn’t stop watching.” Dr. Oz is a prominent heart surgeon at Columbia University and New York Presbyterian Hospital, who has been called “America’s doctor” because of his best-selling books and appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He also has been honored as Time Magazine and Harvard Alumni’s 100 Most Influential People. “Dr. Oz gives great credibility and will heighten awareness about the seriousness of chronic Lyme disease,” Wilson says, “plus the show is being aired in a key time slot – on the busiest travel days of the year, so many people be will listening to the interview on the radio while traveling to their Thanksgiving Day destinations.”
    In an hour long interview, Dr. Oz and Wilson discuss what could be the most controversial and misunderstood illness in America today. Tens of thousands of victims go either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed with such conditions as multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, autism and even hypochondria. Is Lyme disease rare and easily treated with a short course of antibiotics? Or can it be a chronic and potentially deadly illness that is going under the radar? Tune in and hear the discussion.
    The show airs Wednesday, November 26th at 1 a.m. 7 a.m. and 6 pm EST. Oprah and Friends producers say people who don’t subscribe to the satellite radio can also listen by going to http://www.oprah.com/radio and clicking on the “Free 30 Day XM Radio Trial.” Register and you can listen online. Dr. Oz also asks for Lyme patients to tell their stories by clicking on this link: https://www.oprah.com/plugform.jsp?plugId=495&referer= .
    Under Our Skin is currently set for a theatrical release in spring 2009. For interviews with the filmmaker or any of the subjects featured in the film, please contact Marc Silverstein at Marc@onthemarcmedia.com or 410-963-2345.

    Hi, Just found your blog surfing on the internet! I am too much interested in the information like you are providing. Why you do not write a new ebook and publish it by collecting more information on this topic. NO! Do not take me wrong! I am not a publisher. Ha! Ha! Ha! You have written in a detailed manner that’s why I am asking you about the ebooks. Have you ever thought of any type of ebook and in its business. It is a really hardwork to create a blog like yours and to maintain it. But you have done really a great job. Congrates! I have few questions. Do you think that blogs are better than ebooks for providing information and making money. I Just take the ebooks as products. I have never tried to write any ebook and to do any sort of business. If I say something about my website here, then you will consider this comment as a spam and NO One like that. But would like to say, that while selling FREE EBOOKS I have made such a huge amount, just in few days, that you will be amazed! If you visit my website (by clicking on my name in this comment) then you are bound to be surprised. I am sure this is a new technique of selling, I have found over the net. But lets talk about writing ebooks and providing unique information to the internet community, have you ever tried writing anything and publishing it? Do you also sell ebooks? What is your experience? I am interested in knowing about it or your experiments? Waiting for reply - Thanks, Regards

    Thank you for your suggestions but my goal is to educate and support - not to make money. However, I love to write and have been thinking about selling ebooks on other topics. I will check out your site - thanks for the encouragement!
